Title: Boycott Arizona
WHEREAS: The National Latno Congerso has convened a gathering of Latino organizations dedicated to the well-being of Latino communities throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS: The covening and participating organizations effectively constitute a national network for communicating information for mutually supportive actions; and
WHEREAS: There now exists in Arizona an unprecedented campaign of vilification being conducted thorough: (1) Radio talk shows, (2) a ballot proposal for the City of Phoenix authorizing its local police officers and city employees to identify and apprehend persons suspected of being undocumented immigrants, (3) unintended application of an anti-human smuggler law being misused to arrest and prosecute undocumented persons as coconspirators by the Maricopa County Sheriff and the Maricopa County Attorney, (4) numerous extremist legislative actions by the Arizona State Legislature denying basic State public services to the undocumented community, (5) ballot initiatives proposing denial of equal access to tuition assistance for higher education, plus denial of adult education, family literacy and childcare assistance.
WHEREAS the Congressional Leadership has undermined legislation to raise the minimum wage by tying it to tax breaks for the wealthy and also has refused to debate and vote on the Employee Free Choice Act that would allow for union representation when over 50% of workers sign up in favor of union representation;
1. Therefore be it resolved that the National Latino Congreso calls on Congress to pass and the President to sign legislation to raise the minimum wage without tying to other issues; and
2. Therefore be it further resolved that Congress pass and the President sign the Employee Free Choice Act.
