Texas One of the First States to Pass Pro-Cuba Resolution
San Antonio, TX - The William C. Velásquez Institute (WCVI) announced its approval and applauded Texas legislators for their Texas State Resolution, SCR54, memorializing the U.S. Congress to remove the trade/travel and financial restrictions relating to Cuba. "The support of SCR54 by the Texas legislature contradicts the current Cuba policies of the Bush Administration. This is a step in the right direction for the people of Texas, who could benefit from increased trade with Cuba," said Antonio González, WCVI President.
WCVI has sent letters expressing support and congratulations to the resolution sponsors, Representative Domingo Garcia, Representative Jose Menendez, and Senator David Bernsen. "With the adoption of this important resolution, the members of the Texas legislature have joined the growing chorus of American public opinion that call for an end to the 40-year embargo. This is especially important because many Senate and Congressional leaders from Texas are among the biggest supporters of the embargo. This resolution is a message from home that says too many of Texas' federal representatives are out of step with their own backyard," said González.
In response to the confirmation of SCR54, Representative Domingo Garcia commented, "After 40 years of a failed embargo policy, its time that we try something different. By lifting the embargo, not only will we be able to sell Texas and U.S. products to Cuba, but also help open up the political and economic process in Cuba." |
