Recently Registered Latino Voters Favor Villaraigosa
Over Hahn by Large Margin

82.4% Indicate Intention to Vote in Election

Los Angeles, CA – A recent survey of recently registered Latino voters in Los Angeles conducted by the William C. Velásquez Institute from April 23rd to May 4th showed that 50% indicated support for City Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa with only 3.6% giving support to the incumbent Mayor Jim Hahn. An unusually large group of voters still indicated being undecided at 46.4%.

The polling sample was drawn from a group of 45,000 Los Angeles Latinos that registered to vote between August, 18, 2004 and April 1, 2005. A total of 4,875 voters were interviewed.

A high number of Latino voters also indicated that they would be participating in the runoff election via Election Day ballot or vote by mail at 82.4%. Only 8.9% indicated non-participation and 8.7% were undecided whether they were voting at all.

“Our survey was conducted among voters that form opinions late and typically have low rates of participation in local elections. As the elections approach the undecided will form opinions and it’s likely that both candidates will gain significant support from among the undecided, though clearly Villaraigosa enjoys significant support,” said Robert Aguinaga, WCVI Research Director.

“The fact that 82.4% of recently registered Latinos plan to vote in the May 17th Mayoral elections indicates high electoral interest in the community. Nevertheless, it is not likely that turnout will be that high. WCVI predicts overall Latino turnout will be between 40% and 50% of the 340,000 Latino registered voters,” added WCVI President Antonio Gonzalez.
