Background:
Last July the LA City Council unanimously approved a resolution declaring the month of August 2010 “Immigrant Pride Month.” As a direct response to Arizona’s racist SB 1070 Act, the city of Los Angeles is counteracting by celebrating its immigrants, who compose 40% of the total city population (together with their children immigrant families comprise 60% of LA!). The William C. Velasquez Institute, along with other Latino-run organizations are taking this opportunity by introducing Ayudemonos Nosotros Mismos, a weeklong fundraiser event with an added goal to educate others on immigrant rights.
Event:
Ayudemonos Nosotros Mismos entails popular education and fundraising at thirteen heavily-Latino populated intersections to distribute educational flyers and collect dollars and cents to fund the much needed immigrant rights movement. With various media outlets as promotional sponsors, Ayudemonos Nosotros Mismos will unify the immigrant residents of Los Angeles and encourage them to lend a hand to one another in support of the cause for legalization.
